Recent high school graduates will soon be running off to college. They are about to leave behind the security of a family environment, and dive into the life of a college student.

 

However, one of the requirements of most college and universities now days, is that incoming students must have some form of affordable student health insurance. Even part time college students are required to maintain some for of college student health insurance.

 

Unfortunately, today many parents are working for employers that either doesn’t provide health insurance, or they will no longer cover the children who are over 18 years of age and off to college. Some employers will cover their employee’s children up to the age of 25, as long as they meet certain requirements, usually involving a minimum of classroom hours per semester.

 

Before you rush off to find health insurance for students, some basic homework needs to be done. The beginning of your search should start with your parents’ employer, first, to verify whether or not they will provide any form of affordable student health insurance, second, to see if you can purchase, or if you qualify for this student health insurance coverage.

 

If the company that any of your parents work for offer health benefits to their employees, and for some reason your family hasn’t taken advantage of these benefits, it still may be possible for the student to purchase this coverage from their parent’s employer on their own. The human resources department should be able to assist you with this process if that’s the case.

 

The students, who don’t have health insurance coverage through their parent’s insurance plan, are left on their own to seek their own affordable student health insurance.

 

This can be done in several different ways. You can utilize the student health insurance plan that the college or university you will be attending provides, or you can seek college student health insurance on your own through a health insurance agent.

 

There are pros and cons with either choice. The end result however, is that you must have some form of affordable student health insurance coverage in place before your school semester begins.

 

Many college student health insurance plans offered by the colleges themselves are rather minimal in the nature of the coverage they provide. They may lack doctor’s office visits, or prescription drug coverage, while others will limit your benefits to a set dollar amount per year. For some, these limited benefit plans may be exactly they type of coverage you are looking for, for others, these student health insurance policies won’t provide the benefits they need.

 

If you are in good general health, and most young people going off to college do fit this category, the health insurance offered by the school may be the right product for you.

 

However, if you are not in good physical health, perhaps you’re currently taking prescription medications, or have a pre-existing medical condition, these limited benefit type of plans will not offer you the proper level of affordable student health insurance protections you will need.

 

So what do you do? Well, we recommend you do some plan to plan comparisons before you decide on which student health insurance plan best fits your needs. Who knew you would have to do some homework even before you attended college right? A little research now, could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses during your college years.

 

Now, find out what the premium costs and the benefits are of your college’s student health insurance plan. Next, contact a license health insurance agent and receive at least three different student health insurance quotes from them. Make sure when you receive these quotes that you get three quotes from three different health insurance companies, not just three different quotes from the same company. That way, you know you are getting the most competitively priced plans available.

 

All that’s left to do now is compare the benefits of each plan, balanced against the premiums of each plan. Make sure when you do this, you compare the same type of plan against the other. Deductibles, annual coverage limits, prescription drug coverage, etc.

 

If several plans all have the same deductible and there is a huge difference in the premium amount, you need to do some extensive research into the exact benefits you are getting. If one plan is extremely cheaper than another, there is usually a good reason for it. It’s usually lacking some very important benefits that you may need down the road, even if you don’t see the need for those benefits today.

 

Perhaps they don’t offer prescription coverage, Doctor’s office visits, or they limit the benefit amount to $50,000 per year, could be one of 25 different variables that are involved with the purchasing of a student health insurance plan.

 

The point being, understand the benefits and the type of affordable student health insurance coverage you are purchasing. It could possibly save you thousands of dollars over the course of your college career.
